Why build a Memorial
to Slavery & the Slave Trade
The Guadeloupe Regional Council has built the MEMORIAL ACTe, a Caribbean Centre on the Expression and Memory of Slavery & the Slave Trade in Pointe à Pitre, in the former Darboussier factory.
Through knowledge, culture and creation, it is a means by which the local authorities can contribute towards healing wounds of a past which has greatly impacted the edification of not only the Guadeloupean society, but also the Caribbean and American societies.
"We, descendants, children of Guadeloupe, witnesses and actors of our history, must create a new humanism based on reconciliation and fraternity. When confronted with a world or society in crisis, these are not empty words - they are a prayer, an incantation, an action: gather together, testify, remember, build and sign-up to ensure that nothing is forgotten, and that the worst moments of our history never repeat themselves again".
This is the meaning and testimonial
of the MEMORIAL ACTe. »
